Weekly News 4-5-24

 Weekly News for 2-P 4-5-24

*Author Melissa Stewart will be at WCS in May.  Check your child’s take-home folder for a book order form from Ms. Luchies, in case you would like to order one of her books for your child. Orders and payments are due on April 8th.

*Second graders will perform in an evening concert on April 30th. More info coming soon.

*Eat the Rainbow Week is next week. See poster on page 2 for info!

*In math we practiced attributes of 2-D and 3-D shapes, and learned to partition rectangles into same size squares (working on the concept of area).  We are practicing math facts every day, as well as telling time and counting money.

*April is National Poetry Month. During reading workshop we read poetry and learned about line breaks. We read a variety of poems. Students practiced telling what a poem was about and finding strong words that made the poem come alive. The kids loved reading poems during independent reading time as well.

*We kicked off our poetry writing unit as well. We wrote a group poem first to get ourselves going. Then we brainstormed a list of possible poetry topics. We read lots of different poems to get familiar with this new genre. Then we started writing - and we are on our way to writing some amazing poetry already!

*Our spelling focus was words with r controlled vowels. Our phonics work was the prefix dis- and a review of all prefixes and suffixes. The daily practice of high frequency words is showing up in our writing!

*In Science we did another investigation about matter, called “Can you really fry an egg on a hot sidewalk?” We learned about insulation and how some materials insulate better than others. It was fun to test different materials to see which would be the best oven mitt. Styrofoam was the winner!

*We also began learning about the upcoming solar eclipse. We read the book Eclipse and on Monday will  watch a Mystery Science video about eclipses and read a Scholastic News article about the topic to build our background knowledge. We have solar eclipse glasses for all students for Monday afternoon.

Scientists testing the insulating power of tin foil, cloth and sytrofoam

Using "mittens" of three materials we tested whether we could feel which water bottle was hot and which was cold.

More fact practice fun
