Weekly News for 2-P 12-13-24
*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, and hats daily as the weather turns colder. Also, please send indoor shoes daily or send a pair to leave in the locker.
* We could use donations of cleaning wipes.
*This week in social studies work we continued our government unit by learning about the three branches of government and the roles they each play.
*We finished unit 5 of Reveal Math. This week we worked hard on adding multiple addends with various strategies, including adjusting one addend to friendly numbers for easier adding, adding the tens and then the ones, or decomposing one addend so we can add mentally. We are doing some review work ahead of the unit 5 test.
*We published and shared our science articles on Monday and then we began a new writing cycle with more explanatory writing. We are working on invention reports. After examining a model of this writing and the rubric that laid out our expectations, we used Pebble Go to find an interesting invention and did our own research. Students took notes on a graphic organizer and after two days of research we were ready to write their first draft. We wrote the first two paragraphs and we will do our conclusion on Monday. Next week we will take this through the revision and editing process.
*Our grammar work was focused on using object pronouns when writing (her, him, they, us, them). Our spelling pattern this week was long o patterns. In phonics work we focused on long i patterns and then vowel team review. We are learning lots of patterns at a time now, so extra practice is helpful for us to master these as spellers.
*During reading workshop we focused on finding the main idea in narrative nonfiction. These texts tell true information in a story format. We added to our understanding of inventions by reading many books on this topic. Students practiced relaying information about the invention and the inventor!
