Weekly News 1-24-25

 Weekly News for 2-P 1-24-25

*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!

*In math we worked more on subtraction with practice of adjusting equations to subtract with “friendly” numbers. Then we learned to write related addition equations from a subtraction problem so students can “count up” as their strategy. We finished the unit with two days of problem solving, both one step and two step word problems. We will take a few days to review before the test next week. Money continues to be a daily focus as well as we work to learn all the coins and their values!

*In social studies this week we continued our unit on “Economics.” We started the last part of this unit about being wise consumers. We learned about saving and spending money and how we have to make choices based on our resources. Students are participating in great discussions and are learning challenging new vocabulary (i.e. scarcity, producers, consumers).

*In writing we worked on another type of descriptive writing - this time with a journal entry. Students brainstormed events and details about a particular day and then drafted pieces that sequentially relayed the information. We continue to work on creating clear, complete sentences, and using adjectives and details to elaborate on our topics. This week our grammar lesson was on possessives - so we are just starting to learn when to use an apostrophe to show ownership. This will be a work in progress!

*Our focus was on inflectional endings (s, es)  in spelling this week. During our phonics time we practiced dipthongs (oi, oy and ou, ow).

*In Go2 Science Beth and Curtis discovered a new reef site where the shore is covered in ancient reef fossils. They found out why octopuses are considered masters of camouflage. We saw reef manta rays, sharks, and an eel with a mouthful of sharp teeth! It’s so much fun to be along for the adventure.

We like to write and draw about what we see in Go2 Science!

We are tracking the health of the reef and how many sharks we spot!

This organizer helped us plan our descriptive journal entries.

Fitness Friday Fun - kids in motion - excuse the blurry photos!

It gets pretty bright in the gym!!!

We worked through scenarios in social studies about whether it was a cost (negative) or benefit (positive) to buy a particular item.

The kids did a great job thinking about how to use cost/benefit analysis.

More analyzing costs and benefits as a consumer!

Reading group working on nonfiction texts about golden tamarins and how zoos help them thrive.

On Friday we did a subtraction challenge - could we solve a subtraction equation FOUR WAYS? Yes we could!!!!

Beth and Curtis have a big impact on our young scientists!

Partners work through math review.

This student made a map of French Polynesia - where Beth and Curtis are right now!

We love to have a former Wildcat help with writing.

Showing our math skills!

We are learning to differentiate by needs and wants.
