 Weekly News for 2-P 1-21-22

*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!

*Please remember to pack back-up masks and also to check with your child about the fit of their mask to make sure they have one that is working for them.

*In math this week we learned how to use open number lines to solve problems with two digit numbers.  We also explored how to use diagrams as tools to solve word problems (start-change-diagrams, part-part-total diagrams).  This work is helping us prepare to be flexible problem solvers who can add multi digit numbers.

*During reading workshop we continued our focus on narrative nonfiction and read books that fit this genre.  Ms. Luchies set us up with some great choices and we particularly loved Ivan: the Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla and Moon.  We used our reader’s notebooks to record key take-aways from each book.

*In writing workshop we wrote more in our All About Books.  Students are elaborating on each chapter or section of their book, practicing adding specific and interesting details.  Many writers began a second book this week, on another topic they know a lot about. We are doing some daily editing practice to strengthen that skill.

*In science we kicked off our force and motion unit with an anchor phenomenon about how old fashioned ice boards relate to skateboards.  Students were hooked into thinking about many concepts of force/motion.  They built an initial conceptual model through this investigation. So many great questions and theories! Our upcoming explorations will focus on friction, balanced/unbalanced forces, magnets and patterns of motion.

*Our focus was on long i patterns in spelling this week (i-consonant-e, y).  Next week is long o.  We learned a new game called SPARKLE that they love, a terrific spelling and listening game! In grammar we added possessive pronouns, alphabetizing and adjectives to our repertoire!

In Guidance we had a great lesson about personal space.

Practicing personal space with "bubbles."

We started writing letters on the Wildcat Express.  It's fun to get mail!

All About writing - ice cream is a fun topic!

We dug into narrative nonfiction this week and loved it!

This expert is writing about cats!

A dinosaur all about with detailed illustrations

We learned interesting facts about real animals in narrative nonfiction books.

Using diagrams in math can help us solve problems.

We loved the book MOON, about the relationship between Earth and the moon.

Our Mystery Science hook had us contemplating ice boards.

After investigating ice boards we labeled them to show how they worked.
