Weekly News for 2-P 1-14-22
*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!
*Please remember to pack back-up masks and also to check with your child about the fit of their mask to make sure they have one that is working for them.
*In math we have done lots of work with money. We have completed a lot of “shopping” and have paid for items with exact change in multiple ways. We also began to make change. During an exploration lesson we investigated arrays, 2-D shapes, geoboards and telling time.
*During reading workshop we turned our focus to narrative nonfiction and read books that fit this genre. Books in this genre often tell true information in a story format. We noticed that narrative nonfiction can be organized in different ways. In our reader’s notebooks we drew and wrote about what we learned.
*In writing workshop we kicked off our nonfiction writing unit with “All About Books.” This mini unit will build on what the kids did in first grade. Students brainstormed topics that they are experts on and chose their favorite for their first book. Next they learned how to plan out their table of contents with different sections or chapters. There was a lot of excitement as we dug into a new type of writing.
*In science we completed our plant adaptations unit and finished solving our mystery about “Why is there a superbloom in Death Valley?” Ask your child to tell you what causes this phenomenon. Mystery Doug led us on awesome virtual field trip into three unique places in Death Valley and we were enthralled!
*Our focus was on long e patterns in spelling this week (ee, ea). Next week is long i. In grammar we added pronouns as a new skill as we gain independence with prior concepts.
