Weekly News for 2-P 2-11-22
*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!
*Students need back up masks in their backpack daily.
*Bring valentines for Monday!
*In math we spent more time working on ballpark estimates and learned the partial sums algorithm (a method for regrouping that encourages mental math and a strong sense of place value). We also dipped into regrouping for subtraction. During exploration lessons we worked with arrays, practiced measurement and reviewed shapes. On Friday we did review work for the Unit 6 assessment.
* During reading workshop we learned about biographies. As part of Black History Month we read texts about Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, Mae Jemison and Ruby Bridges. Students had the opportunity to choose biographies that were of interest to them in “Pebble Go.” Second graders made posters to share their knowledge and recorded facts in their reader’s notebooks.
*In science we did our first full lab report. Our question was “Will the car go farther off the ramp on the rug or bare floor?” Students moved through the scientific process of asking a question, forming a hypothesis, developing procedures, conducting the experiment, recording data and writing a conclusion. Partnerships worked together to see how far their cars could go, which was a lot of fun.
*We did another science investigation called “What Makes Bridges So Strong?” After learning about how engineers build bridges for strength, the kids had to create a bridge out of paper that would hold lots of pennies. There was a lot of great teamwork going on as our scientists built various versions of their paper bridges, trying to improve their design with each revision.
*It was review week in spelling so we revisited long vowel patterns and c/k/ck words. Next week we tackle consonant blends. We spent a lot of time working on the components of complete sentences. Students had fun playing a game where they put a subject and predicate together to make some silly sentences!
