Weekly News for 2-P
2-18-22
*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!
*Students need back up masks in their backpack daily.
*In math we reviewed unit 6 skills and took the unit 6 assessment. We also completed the cumulative assessment for the big skills we have done so far this year. Students worked hard all week and practiced place value concepts, ballpark estimates and how to use the partial sums algorithm. After break we begin Unit 7!
* During reading workshop we continued our biography investigation, learning about lots of famous individuals in our country’s history. Highlights were George Washington, Lewis and Clark, Harriet Tubman, and Paul Revere. Students have explored lots of biographies on their own as well.
*In science we revised our car and ramp experiment to see how we could make our car go farther off the ramp onto the rug. Ideas included a steeper ramp, a different push technique or a new ramp position. Students went through the scientific process again and recorded results in their lab reports. It was so much easier the second time around!
*We did two Mystery Science explorations this week. The first was “How Can You Go Faster on a Slide?” In this work we explored friction with cardboard ramps and sliders made of different materials. We had to search for the material that had the least friction. Our next exploration was “Magnets are Weird,” where we took time to play with magnets and see how they interacted with other materials (Could they go through paper? Cardboard? Our desks? Our hands?). We tried lots of different experiments and recorded each attempt.
*Our spelling focus was consonant blends. We will work on dipthongs after break (oi, oy). In grammar we practiced complete sentences as part of our reading comprehension work.
*There was a lot of celebrating this week - we enjoyed Valentine’s Day together on Monday. Then we celebrated the 100th day of school on Thursday with some fun activities; we did 100 jumping jacks and counted to 100 in lots of ways. Decades Day was a blast on Friday. So much cuteness! The kids had fun dancing on the basketball court to DJ Dimbleby’s tunes. We also saw a play this week, put on by the 6th grade. It was so much fun to see a production in the cafeteria. We were an excellent audience!
