Weekly News for 2-P 2-3-22
*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!
*Students need back up masks in their backpack daily.
*Valentine’s list will be in folders Monday.
*In math we worked our way through big skills in unit 6, including solving multi digit word problems, refining strategies for finding differences, using base 10 blocks to add double digit numbers and making ballpark estimates. Next week we will learn the partial sums algorithm (an alternative to regrouping through “carrying.”)
* We celebrated TWOs Day on 2-2-22 with a two-focused day of fun learning. We read Two of Everything, played Brain Break Bingo with many two minute movement breaks, created drawings out of the number 2, hunted for pairs in our room, created patterns of two with a special snack, and did a STEM challenge to build a tower two feet high with new building blocks. This group LOVES a special celebration and we had a great time together.
*Our science focus was integrated into reading workshop all week. Through many texts and learning videos, we explored important concepts in force and motion, including push and pulls, friction, gravity, mass and balanced forces. This will help us in our upcoming experiments.
*In writing workshop we learned to write friendly letters so we can mail them on The Wildcat Express, our school-wide mailing system. The kids loved writing to friends, siblings, teachers and cousins. Students are quickly getting used to the format of writing a letter and are practicing how to address the envelope for mailing. There was a lot of practice with careful handwriting and spelling and using proper capitalization and punctuation.
*In science we did our first mini experiment about force and motion to get us familiar with the scientific process. Our question was: Will the car go farther off the ramp onto tin foil, a napkin or wax paper? We formed hypotheses, conducted the experiment, recorded our data and wrote our conclusions. Next week we begin conducting and writing lab reports!
*Our focus was on ck/k words. Next week is review week in spelling. One of our grammar focuses was complete sentences; recognizing them and writing them.
