3-25-22

 Weekly News for 2-P 3-25-22

*March 29th is our field trip to the Maine Maritime Museum.

*It was so nice to meet with all of you for conferences - thanks for making the time!

*In math we started Unit 7 with a focus on geometry and equal parts.  Students learned about 2-D and 3-D shapes, the attributes of shapes (sides, vertices, angles), parallel and non parallel lines. We studied polygons and quadrilaterals and they did a terrific job with this new vocabulary.  We had fun using straws and twist ties to build many sided shapes.

*During reading workshop we read lots of fairy tales and looked for common characteristics in this genre, such as a good character, a villain, a setting in a castle or forest, an element of magic and common beginning and ending language (once upon a time, happily ever after).  Second graders learned to fill out fairy tale charts and circled back to identifying the author’s message or lesson in each book.  Next week we will work on comparing and contrasting within fairy tales.

*We spent writing workshop time all week completing our force and motion informational books by adding details, careful illustrations and taking the time to revise and edit our work.  These came home in student portfolios so you can see your child’s hard work! Our next unit is on opinion writing.

*Our spelling focus was -oo word patterns.  We sorted words that make the long -oo sound and ones that make the short -oo sound.  During the week we also practiced adding suffixes to these words as we work toward being accurate and independent spellers.

*On Friday we brought our Chickadee booklets to library and Ms. Luchies helped us vote on our favorite one.  We can’t wait to hear the results!

We decorated our portfolio covers with special memories from the trimester.
