Weekly News for 2-P 4-8-22
*In math we practiced attributes of 3-D shapes, learned to partition rectangles into same size squares, made arrays and wrote matching multiplication facts. We practiced the partial sums algorithm daily and reviewed for our unit 8 assessment. We are practicing math facts every day so we can wrap up addition and move onto mastering subtraction facts.
*During reading workshop we worked on comparing and contrasting both fiction and nonfiction texts. We did this through venn diagrams and charts, where we explored how settings, events and characters were alike and different. Students are using great language as they talk about important points in texts and how they match up with each other…or how they do not match up!
*We practiced organizing opinion writing with some important topics (best pet, best game, best animal). Then we dug into writing book recommendation letters. We have been writing letters for the Wildcat Express for so long that our letter writing skills are in great shape. We are learning to form an opinion about a book and explain, in a letter format, why someone should read it. This includes explaining our reasons with supporting details. We are working on those transition words too, which helps us be organized writers.
*Our spelling focus was words writers use frequently (i.e. put, always, out, from). We want students to be accountable for spelling these words correctly in all parts of their writing. Next week we will tackle ou/ow words. In grammar we introduced adverbs as we continued to practice earlier skills.
*We began a mini social studies unit on maps this week. We explored the map of Woolwich and found landmarks, bodies of water, surrounding towns and even our own roads. Students were fascinated with the map and had so many great questions. We practiced reading map legends to answer questions and learned about the compass rose. Next week we will explore how the geography of Woolwich impacted transportation long ago.
