 Weekly News for 2-P 1-27-23

*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!

*In math this week we worked with thermometers and did lots of problem solving with visual diagrams. We practiced how to use open number lines as an efficient way to solve problems with multi-digit numbers. We did lots of review work for the Unit 5 math assessment which we will complete next week.

*In writing workshop we worked on our second “All About Book.”  Since we have gone through the process once, we are showing greater independence the second time. Soon we will start a different type of nonfiction writing; lab reports!

*In science we completed our first force and motion exploration “How Could You Win a Game of Tug-of-War Against a Bunch of Adults?” We learned about pushes and pulls.  As we made and tested our very own “Hopper Poppers,” we worked with concepts of how to add greater or different levels of force to pushes/pulls and how elasticity can be a factor. The classroom was buzzing as partnerships worked to make their popper get better height.  We recorded our launch data and tried adjustments as we worked.

*Our focus was on words with silent letters in spelling this week.  Closed and open syllables were the topic of our phonics work.  We used our new favorite game called SPARKLE to practice common spelling patterns and high frequency words this week. In grammar we practiced prior skills and did extra verb work.

A new math game - Place Value Uno with 3 digit numbers

This game helps us compare numbers.

We made Hopper Poppers in science.

The elastic band helped us make the popper jump when released.

Creating the hopper popper was step 1.

We had to do careful cutting of small edges.

The ruler held the popper in place until it was release time.

Nice form for popping!

We conducted many trials to see how high they would go.

During Guidance we danced to a song about calming strategies!

This is where we recorded our hopper popper data.

Getting ready to pop!
