Weekly News for 2-P 2-3-23
*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!
*Valentine’s Day information was sent home in folders last week if you are looking for the lists so your child can make valentines.
*In math this week we completed the unit 5 math assessment. Unit 6 kicked off with collecting and graphing data in a fun way. Then we learned to use “QQDs” (quantity, quantity, difference diagrams) to solve comparison number stories by plugging in known data and finding the missing information. We tried out some new UNO games that helped us build our place value skills and strengthen our addition facts.
*During reading workshop we began to read narrative nonfiction, informational texts told in a story format. Students were especially interested to hear about how wolves were re-introduced back into California in the book, The Wolves are Back. We really love learning about true stories in narrative form!
*In writing workshop we took time to finish our “All About Books.” On Friday we shared our books with Mrs. Vise’s class, after some “fancying up” with illustrations and editing for spelling, periods and capitals. Next week we start a different type of nonfiction writing; lab reports!
*In science we focused on balanced forces and engineering in an exploration called “What Makes Bridges so Strong?” Students learned about the different types of supports and designs that engineers use to build bridges and got to try their own hand at creating a sturdy paper bridge that could hold as many pennies as possible. There was a lot of trial and error and bridge revision happening Friday. Some of our paper bridges held over 100 pennies!
*During Go2 Science we saw so many manatees with Beth and Curtis. We learned about how solar cookers work and got to vote on the location of next week’s adventure. We are tracking data during each livestream to see how many manatees have boat strike scars and how many do not have them. We are curious about what can be done to help the manatees stay safe!
*Our focus was reviewing the last 5 units in spelling this week. We worked on compound words and syllable types in phonics. We used our new favorite game called SPARKLE to practice recent patterns and high frequency words.
