Weekly News for 2-P 1-20-23
*Thanks for sending coats, mittens, hats and boots, plus indoor shoes daily!
*Remember to send a back up set of clothes for your child's locker if you haven't already done so.
*In math this week we learned how to use open number lines to solve problems with two digit numbers. We also explored how to use diagrams as tools to solve word problems (start-change-diagrams, part-part-total diagrams). This work is helping us prepare to be flexible problem solvers who can add multi digit numbers.
*During reading workshop we continued to read nonfiction texts that helped us learn all about force and motion. Students are pulling main ideas from each text and are gaining new vocabulary that will help them as scientists.
*In writing workshop we wrote more in our All About Books. Students are elaborating on each chapter or section of their book, practicing adding specific and interesting details. Many writers will soon begin a second book, on another topic they know a lot about. We are doing some daily editing practice to strengthen that skill.
*In science we kicked off our force and motion unit with an anchor phenomenon about how old fashioned ice boards relate to skateboards. Students were hooked into thinking about many concepts of force/motion. They built an initial conceptual model through this investigation. So many great questions and theories! Our upcoming explorations will focus on friction, balanced/unbalanced forces, magnets and patterns of motion.
*Our focus was on c,k and ck patterns in spelling this week. Next week is silent letters. We studied -ing endings in our phonics work. In grammar we added possessive pronouns, alphabetizing and adjectives to our repertoire!
