Weekly News for 2-P 4-8-23
*In math we practiced attributes of 3-D shapes, learned to partition rectangles into same size squares, made arrays and wrote matching multiplication facts. We practiced the partial sums algorithm daily and kids are taking turns teaching us through the steps! We are practicing math facts every day.
*During reading workshop we worked on comparing and contrasting fiction texts. We did this through venn diagrams and charts, where we explored how settings, events and characters were alike and different. Students are using great language as they talk about important points in texts and how they match up with each other…or how they do not match up!
*After doing opinion writing with some important topics (best pet, best game, best animal) we dug into writing book recommendation letters. We have been writing letters for the Wildcat Express for so long that our letter writing skills are in great shape. We are learning to form an opinion about a book and explain, in a letter format, why someone should read it. This includes explaining our reasons with supporting details from the text. We are working on those transition words too, which helps us be organized writers.
*Our spelling focus was contractions and abbreviations. Our phonics was centered on -ew and -aw sounds and the many ways they can be represented.
*We worked through another matter investigation and in this lesson students learned how new materials are invented. In the activity “Bouncy Glass Inventions,” students came up with creative ideas for inventions that use an exciting futuristic material: glass that bounces and stretches like rubber!
