Weekly News 3-22-24

 Weekly News for 2-P 3-22-24

*Thanks for such an amazing showing at parent-teacher conferences. It was wonderful to talk with you all about your children!

*We heard the last of the Chickadee nominees this week and will vote in library with Ms. Luchies next week!

*In math this week we did a lot of work with data - creating line plots and picture graphs. We continued to refine our measuring skills and our understanding of the US Customary and Metric systems of measurement, as we developed our knowledge of tools and units in each system. We reviewed for and completed the unit 7 test. We are doing daily practice of time, money and addition/subtraction facts. Next up is geometry!

*During reading workshop we focused on how characters respond to challenges and big events in literature. We analyzed how we can learn about a character’s response through their thoughts, actions and dialogue.

*We continued to work on opinion writing with book recommendation letters. We used a special organizational “recipe” to help us form a clear paragraph on a particular opinion about our books of choice. We practiced introductions, conclusions and how to use transition words to articulate our reasons. We are learning to “stack” our reasons with additional details to make our letters “stronger, longer and more convincing!” Adding details about each reason was a structured way to elaborate and support our thinking. We will keep practicing pieces in this format before learning to write book recommendation letters.

*Our spelling focus was words with consonant le endings (final stable syllables).  Next week we will tackle contractions and abbreviations. Our phonics work was prefixes and suffixes (-ful,-less, ly, -un).

*We completed our Wabanaki unit in social studies with learning Abenaki family words, and an introduction to Abenaki language and culture. Students finished their companion books where they captured their takeaways and then, as a final project, created posters to share what they have learned.
